This is where the heart is…

I hear that it is morbid to thank the people who have made it possible to arrive at this moment in history. Most would say that no thanks is needed. Or at least that is what I think they might say. I would not presume to assert that my contribution to others has been equal or greater than those made to me. I have fought no wars, but I have saved many lives. But in those moments, when risking my life to save others, I did – in fact – save myself as well. Not in a selfish way. When the order to abandon ship, to man the lifeboats is raised, there are those who race topside while others to the hull. The drive shaft shudders and the house lights flutter. There is no time to think about how one’s life arrived in that moment. There is only silent focus.
